Giles is an English solicitor who, during his long career, has lived and worked in Australia, Cyprus, Abu Dhabi and Dubai as well as the UK. He has wide experience in the structuring, negotiation and drafting of a wide range of commercial contracts including energy, engineering, and construction. He has spent time as an in-house legal adviser in addition to private practice.

Since retiring from partnership with City firm Nabarro Nathanson in 2002, he has run his own niche legal practice. Work in recent years has including acting for clients engaged in dredging and port developments, energy from waste projects, supply and maintenance contracts for new intercity train engines in the UK, advising international architectural practices on major new developments in the City of London and the project company on a 25 year beach maintenance PFI contract.

He is co-author of the JCT Constructing Excellence Contract, and contributed the chapter on international construction for Schmitthoff on the Law of International Trade.

He is a proponent of plain English in contract drafting and is the founder and director of ContractStore.com, a company which sells contract templates online. His external activities have included acting as trustee/director of non-profit organisations including Turner’s House, the home designed and built by the artist JMW Turner.
